A story in Get Reading today tells the story of a troubling community pub that was closed four years ago and is now being converted into flats.  Local councillors agreed with a petition from 202 local residents to allow a change of use for the building in order that the conversion could go ahead in spite of some local protest.

It seems that when the pub was last open it was the source of a great deal of anti-social behaviour and crime in the area and the residents feared that if it reopened as a pub they would be faced with the same problems.  By approaching the council with the petition, presumably in support of a developer who was keen to convert the pub into flats, the residents have won the day.

I’m a believer in people petition power and it’s great to know that these councillors are listening to their electorate.
