I’ve just come across a story in the Louth Leader (in Lincolnshire) about a police initiative to encourage people to security mark their property. The Louth Neighbourhood Policing Team held a property marking event at B&Q in Louth, Lincolnshire on Wednesday last week. Signs around the store directed customers to the police crime prevention stand, where they were able to obtain advice and have their expensive purchases security marked.
This coincides with an item published in our most recent Newsletter, which has found that only 1 in 5 (20.2%) of our visitors who complete the Home Security Survey have marked their property. Although this is considerably better than it was 25 years ago, when property marking was first being promoted, the finding is still disappointing. It’s disappointing for a number of reasons and I’ll let PC Rachel Dobson of the Louth Neighbourhood Policing Team say why:
“When tools and high value equipment are seized after arrests and following the execution of warrants, it is important that police are able to prove the property is stolen and, ideally, return it to its rightful owner. The use of Smartwater or postcode marking helps us to do that. All too often, it cannot be proved that valuable items are the result of a burglary and, not only does that mean the owner never gets them back, but it can also mean that the suspect cannot be charged with a suspected offence and even gets the seized property given back to them.”
So, why not use one of these forthcoming cold and miserable weekends to start marking up some of your stuff and what’s more there is a whole heap of advice on this website to help you do it, just follow this link:
You know it makes sense!
