During the early hours of Monday 25th February a man dressed as Batman turned up at Trafalgar House Police Station in Bradford to deliver a suspect into police custody. Not surprisingly the police don’t know who Batman is and anyway he quickly disappeared into the night, no doubt intent on continuing his crusade to rid Bradford City of its dastardly criminals. But in spite of this the police consequently charged the 27 year old suspect with handling stolen goods and fraud related offences and he’ll be appearing at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court on Friday, March 8.
Now you might think this incident to be unusual, but if you do you’d be wrong. It seems that there are a lot of people around the world who like to dress up and emulate comic heroes and not all of them are nuts
There’s Mark Wayne Williams the Petoskey Batman from Michigan, who it has to be said has been arrested a couple times for obstructing police
Then there’s Seattle’s Lynnwood Batman, Phoenix Jones, who patrols the streets along with other ‘superheroes’ dressed in a similar fashion to Batman
New York has a ‘holy nut’ who roams the streets at night wearing all the Batman gear and where he allegedly beats up drug dealers, muggers and burglars
Batman-like costumed, Matthew Argintar, got arrested in New Jersey back last summer for scaring the hell out of shoppers at the local Home Depot
The Slovak Batman, is 26-year-old Zoltan Kohari, from Dunajska Streda, who wears a self-made batman outfit and goes around his town cleaning the streets, helping the elderly, and calling the police when he spots something suspicious.
The Taubaté Batman, employed by Brazilian military police, is a retired 50 year old soldier who dresses as batman whist fighting crime
The Petaluma Batman (California) has his own Facebook page and has quite a following! He says “I don't take justice into my own hands. You know, if I do see something, I'll call the cops and make sure everything's going smoothly” – quite right too!
Keep ‘em peeled, but you don’t have to dress up to do that!
