Many thanks to Michael Clare, Crime Prevention Design Adviser for Thames Valley Police, for bringing the following House of Commons research note to our attention.
It’ll take you just 10 minutes to read and possibly 1 hour and 10 minutes to talk about it with your friends and colleagues if you’re interested in these sorts of things!
The report suggests that the possible answers to the worldwide fall in crime may be:
- Increased levels of security have reduced the incidence of crime as there have been increases in both the number of private security guards and the use of technology in terms of the provision of security measures in cars, homes and public spaces.
- Offenders have been diverted away from the traditional crimes measured by the International Crime Victim Survey, because they are harder to commit and so are now committing more ‘e-crime’, for example. In other words unmeasured e-crimes may be going up and measured crimes are going down.
- Reduction in purchase price of traditionally stolen property, such as TVs, Hi-Fi, DVD players etc has reduced demand for these goods and therefore crimes such as burglary are not as profitable.
It’s an interesting read. Do take a look and pass it around – you know it makes sense!
