A progress bulletin...
The Crime Prevention Website continues to go from strength to strength and by the end of this week the site will have reached the milestone of 100k visits since launch on 7th April last year. This is only part of the picture though, because the number of visits each week has been growing exponentially to the current rate of 4,800/week. Should this pace continue (and we’re confident it will) then we’re likely to double the total number of visits to the site by October this year giving us an annual rate of 250,000 visits and well over half a million page views! For a little specialist website like ours we think that’s pretty good progress.
Crime prevention is pretty much the same all round the world and therefore it won’t come as a surprise to learn that almost 20% of our visitors come from outside the UK and in particular from countries such as the USA, Australia, Canada, Ireland, India, Malaysia and South Africa. In fact, you’ll note that we have a number of partnering websites from the US and Australia from which we get lots of referred visitors each week.
One of our important goals is to reach 2,000 completed Home Security Surveys; a figure that will ensure that the anonymous data we derive from the survey becomes statistically significant and therefore much more meaningful when used to describe the home security habits of the UK population. Some of you will have noticed that we’re currently running a free prize draw with our friends at TotalSafes.co.uk with the aim of reaching our target by the end of the summer. Well, the rate at which the surveys are being completed has definitely gone up since the promotion, but we’re still a few hundred short and so if you’re reading this and you think you can help us reach our target do please give us a little support by promoting the free service on your websites, Facebook pages and by using Twitter.
Over the next few months you’re going to see a few changes and additions to the site as we introduce a really useful product directory and some new advice sections. The new advice sections will include material on domestic CCTV and something called Crime Opportunity Profiling of Streets (COPS), which is a street auditing process I developed while working/policing in the West End of London. COPS is something that everyone can do and helps communities identify the things in our built environment that aid all types of street crime and anti-social behaviour – watch this space. There’ll also be new information about domestic CCTV and many sections will be brought up-to-date to take account of changes to standards and legislation.
The fact remains that we couldn’t possibly have succeeded in reaching our goals without the support of our 116 partnering websites and particularly our friends in Neighbourhood Watch and the police service, so thank you all, very much!
