Crime Reduction Officer, Sergeant Andy Gregory of the West Midlands Police, is currently starring in a video available on You Tube.
In the short film Andy talks about several important features relating to garden security, but I particular like his attention to an age-old problem concerning the fitting of a hasp and staple on the garden shed.
The hasp is the hinged steel plate, which folds over the staple through which you fit your padlock. About a quarter of the hasp contains the fixing holes for the screws. If you fit it the right way round the rest of the hasp hinges over the top of the fixing screws so that they can’t be undone. You’d be amazed how many people fit them the wrong way round, exposing the screws and therefore completely negating the purpose of the padlock.
So, please take a moment to look at your hasp and staple fittings around the house and garden to make sure you haven’t made the same mistake. Also think about exchanging the screws for coach bolts and washers instead, which will provide a much more secure fitting.
