Last night, someone assessing the security of a detached home in Hampshire in England completed Home Security Survey No. 2,000.  It took them 24 minutes to complete (so they were obviously being careful to answer the questions accurately) and had a risk assessment score of 59/100. I hope the report they were sent was useful to them and that they follow up the advice, because a score of 59 means improvements will be necessary!

We’ve reached 2,000 surveys about a month earlier than we had expected, so thank you to our Neighbourhood Watch Partners and police services that have been promoting it. Thames Valley Police have been particularly supportive, which is evidenced by the fact that 483 of the surveys have been conducted within their police area.

The anonymous information collected from these surveys is used to inform our newsletters and website advice pages and now we’ve reached 2,000 this information has become extremely useful in a statistical sense.

We obviously ask people how they rate the survey’s usefulness and we’re very pleased to report that 97% find the survey useful.  Of these, 65% find the survey to be either very or extremely useful.

When asked how they heard about the free service 23% found it during an internet search, 24% from the police, 14% from Neighbourhood Watch, 9% from word of mouth, 23% from another website and 7% from elsewhere, including from people working for the Victim Support Scheme and Crimestoppers.

Being a former crime prevention specialist in the Met police I am particularly concerned about the gradual downsizing of the police crime prevention service right across the UK.  This is why the survey asks “How would you rate the helpfulness of your local police in terms of their provision of crime prevention advice?”

The survey results have told us that a worrying 47% of respondents are not aware that the local police provid such advice!  The good news is that of those who have sought advice from the police 87% thought the advice was either useful or very useful.

More information from the survey will be published in Newsletter Number 9 in December and so if you would like to see it please subscribe for the Newsletter here.  Newsletter Number 8 is written and will be sent to subscribers in the next couple of days – be sure to register!

Thanks again for all your support
