The Designing out Crime Association meeting was held on 11th April at the wonderful new premises of Central St Martins College in Kings Cross and hosted by that pearlescent and welcoming Professor, Lorraine Gammon. The meeting kicked off with something rather new. Matt Easteal of Brighton and Hove City Council and Lisa Lavia of the Noise Abatement Society gave a most interesting presentation about a project in Brighton where sound is being used to improve the mood and behaviour of people arriving and leaving the nightclub area of the city. Follow this link for the full story about 'Sounding Brighton'; a truly innovative way to control anti-social behaviour.
Of interest to both the police and the public is some research that has been conducted by Design Council Cabe, presented by Brian Quinn. The research highlights design approaches to high density urban housing, which can reduce low-level crime, neighbourhood disputes and anti-social behaviour. The main finding from the research was that large and poorly designed car parking courtyards were something to be avoided, but the police have been saying that since about 1992. That said I'm sure the police crime prevention people will be delighted that somebody else is also saying it now! For the full report visit this link to Creating safe places to live through design
As usual an informative day and a great opportunity to catch up with former colleagues.
