Police in Kidderminster are reminding householders to ensure doors are locked after two burglaries in the town.
The most recent happened in Offmore Rd, Kidderminster at around 6am on Saturday morning, 30 November. Access was gained through the front door, which is not generally used and had been left insecure. Two handbags were taken along with a Primark paper carrier bag containing clothing including a duffle coat, boxer shorts and belt, which had been bought as Christmas presents, and £300 cash.
There was also a burglary in Bronte Drive between 2am and 6am on Saturday, 16 November, when the occupants also accidentally left a door unlocked. Access was gained via a rear sliding patio door which has not been used since the summer. Because there were blinds across it, the householder could not see that it was unlocked and that the latch was up. A 32-inch Sony TV worth £299 was stolen, along with a Toshiba laptop worth £278.
Detective Constable Lloyd Davies of West Mercia Police said: “Both of these burglaries could probably have been prevented, as offenders are opportunists and much prefer to simply open a door and walk in to a house, rather than breaking in.
“We warn householders not to leave doors and windows open in the summer, and we are reminding them to check that doors and windows they rarely use are locked and secure over winter too.”
TCPW Comment: These two incidents confirm to us that there is a type of burglar who simply roams the streets in the early hours looking for that easy opportunity, which invariably is there waiting for him (or her). Only yesterday I suggested that we should do all we can to guard against those sorts of crimes that shouldn’t be happening and these two are examples of just that kind.
May I ask that my Neighbourhood Watch Partners put out a warning to their members to guard against this type of crime and to chat to their neighbours about 'the crimes that shouldn’t happen'. Thank you.
You know it makes sense!
