There was a bit of a commotion near my home in West London this week as the local police executed a warrant at a large house that was being used to grow cannabis and, according to police sources, they seized about £38,000 worth of growing and processed weed along with a couple of suspects from an Eastern European country.
From talking with my neighbours it seems that the place gave itself away due to the constant complaints from the neighbours. Highly regular comings and goings at the address at all times of the day and night, accompanied by door slamming and loud music emanating from the visitors’ cars seems to have been the first clue to what was going on. Fortunately, the neighbours were reporting these matters to our excellent Neighbourhood Policing Team and no doubt, after a period of some observation by the police, the wheels were put into motion.
This cannabis factory is quite typical. It’s a rented house that was extended a couple of years ago creating a rather large loft space, where the cannabis was being grown. It’s located in a generally quiet neighbourhood where the majority of homes are owned by the occupiers. Although the street is a through road it has a fairly low traffic flow.
The house and the activity going on around it stood out simply because “that sort of thing doesn’t happen in this road” – I quote one of my neighbours!
Do you have any suspicions about a house with unusual activity like this near you? Don’t be afraid to report the matter to your local police. They’ll handle your reports with the utmost confidence, but should you wish to remain anonymous do call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
