I think my local area is suffering a mini crime boom at the moment. A cannabis factory shut down and now three night-time burglaries around my local neighbourhood - and all in one week!

Of the three burglaries, one was through an open window, but two were committed by forcing the front doors. Both these doors were multi-point locking and one of them was an enhanced security door to the standard PAS 24.

The reason why these doors were forced was because although the occupiers lifted the handles on the inside to engage the locks they had not then turned the key in the door to lock them in place.  This meant that the thief simply pushed the outside handle down to release the locks and then levered the central latch with a screwdriver. (He could have just as easily poked a stick through the letter plate and knocked the inside handle down to release the latch.)

This is an extremely common mistake to make, so do please make sure you lock off your multi-point doors when you go to bed at night and also remember to leave the keys close to the door where all the occupiers can find them (should you need to get out in an emergency), but not so close to the door if it has a letter plate, because you don’t want them fished for and then lose the car!

More information about multi-point locks and how to use them can be found on this website.
