From the London Evening Standard

Homeowners in North London are turning to private security firms and ex-Gurkhas to protect their homes after a spate of burglaries by thieves on mopeds.

Highly trained private security officers are patrolling Hampstead Garden Suburb around the clock to deter would-be criminals. Police have also increased patrols and are recommending residents to upgrade to state-of-the-art locks and reinforced doors.

LCS Security, which has 500 clients in the suburb, operates two to three car patrols during the day and up to five at night.

Most of their staff are ex-Ghurkha soldiers, including former corporal Nanda Gurung who served for 17 years in places such as Hong Kong, Brunei and Belize. He’s an expert in martial arts and has been trained in conflict management. Other LCS staff include specialist dog handlers.

Company chairman David Smith, a retired Met Police Commander, said residents felt reassured by the “physical presence” of a guard.

TCPW Comment:

Having worked in crime prevention in Camden for several years I know this area quite well and I sincerely hope that the residents do follow the crime prevention advice they’re being given.  In fact these are just the people who should be completing the Home Security Survey on this website, because if doors are being forced open with something as light as a moped then their security is far from adequate.

Completing the survey takes around 20 minutes or so, and you’re sent a free risk assessment score and security report with links to other parts of The Crime Prevention Website for further advice.

At the time of writing this survey has been completed 2,523 times and has a 98% satisfaction rate!

Do the survey, because you know it’ll make sense!
