This news release, from Cumbria Constabulary, highlights the importance of ‘double-locking’ your bike in more ways than you might think.....

Offenders forced entry to the garage of a property on Helme Drive, Kendal and once inside stole two mountain bikes which together are valued at around £4000. The burglary occurred sometime between 5am on the 14th February and 4pm on the 18th February.

Any witnesses to the burglary, or anyone who has been offered a bike for sale under suspicious circumstances, is urged to call Police on 101.

This crime highlights two areas of weakness with the victim’s security; the security of the garage and the security of the bikes within it.  If you’d like to read what the local police advise please follow this link

Essentially the police are advising owners of bikes who leave them in the garage or some other outbuilding to make sure the building itself is very secure and that the bikes kept within are locked to some immovable object, such as some brackets fixed into the wall or floor to which the bike can be locked using two locks.  I absolutely agree with what they’re saying and if I had bikes worth 4K sitting in my garage I think I’d alarm the place as well.

There’s a stack of advice on this website to help you secure the garage and your bike and I would urge you to take a look at these pages and share them with your fellow bike owners.
