Our friends in Cumbria Constabulary are urging residents to be wary of cold callers claiming to do building work.

The following timely reminder appeared in North West Evening News on-line yesterday

As spring starts police are warning people of workmen cold calling at home addresses, offering to complete building work without any prior quote and for cash. Often these people target elderly or vulnerable people.

Sgt Richard Farnworth, Community Safety Officer, said: “With spring approaching I would remind people to be vigilant about anyone calling without a prior appointment. Always ask for identification, call the company to check the person is who they say they are, and if in doubt, just close the door and contact the police.

“While Cumbria is a very safe place to live, we want to ensure we keep it that way and it is therefore important to be vigilant for bogus callers, as not all burglars break into homes.”

TCPW Comment  These people who deliberately target the elderly and vulnerable in our community really are the lowest of the low and all of us have a part to play in making their lives difficult.  Please look out for your vulnerable neighbours and perhaps now is a good time to have a little chat over a cup of tea so that you can gently advise them of the dangers of inviting strangers into their homes to carry out work.

Most of the time the work done by these door knockers is either not done or done badly and they most certainly will rip you off.  If you need work doing get quotes from reputable people, preferably those who have been recommended to you.
