I know this incident reported by our friends in South Yorkshire Police is a little old now, but it does highlight a huge and continuing problem of people not practising some simple crime prevention steps

The consequence of not following simple routines is evident from the story – read on....

Police in Doncaster are urging drivers to be vigilant after a trip to a fast-food outlet proved costly for one motorist.

The man left his car insecure for around five minutes yesterday evening as he popped into a takeaway at Holmes Market, off Copley Road.

During this time, an opportunistic thief snatched the owner’s £500 iPhone from the dashboard, before fleeing on foot and leaving the victim with a sour taste in the mouth.

Patrolling neighbourhood officers checked over 130 unattended cars in the Belle Vue and Bentley areas of the town last night and found 23 – around a sixth – insecure, many with valuable property left on show.

Officers are now appealing to people to be more vigilant and take steps to help reduce offences or the opportunities to commit crime.

Any witnesses or anyone with information about the theft at Holmes Market, which happened between 6.30pm and 6.35pm 6 March should ring South Yorkshire Police on: 101 and quote incident number 1220 of 6 March, 2014.
