Press Release from Cumbria Constabulary

Police are investigating two reports of damage being caused to motor vehicles where fuel has been syphoned.

Both incidents occurred overnight of the 22nd April into the 23rd April.

One of the incidents occurred on Margery Terrace, Cummersdale where offenders approached an unattended secure Vauxhall Corsa and drilled six holes into the fuel tank and syphoned half a tank of fuel. This occurred sometime between 6pm on the 22nd April and 8am on the 23rd April.

The other incident occurred at Rockcliffe where sometime overnight an offender approached an unattended secure Vauxhall Astra and similar to the incident at Cummersdale, drilled six holes into the fuel tank and syphoned half a tank of fuel.

PC Mark Robson said: “We appeal for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in these areas on the night to get in touch. Stealing fuel from another vehicle is not just a crime but it is also dangerous to the road users as fuel will continue to leave the tanks through the drilled holes after the offenders have gone.”

Police are linking the two incidents and ask anyone who has any information to contact Cumbria Police on 101 and ask to speak PC Mark Robson.

TCPW Comment:  Stealing someone’s fuel is one thing, but wrecking the petrol tank in the process and putting the public at danger is utterly moronic.  Let’s hope these people get arrested soon.  It’s difficult to know how we can protect ourselves from this method of fuel theft.  If anyone has experience of it and has a solution please let me know and I’ll add it to my advice page
