A new school newsletter to help secondary school pupils stay safe has been launched by Sutton Council and the Met Police in Sutton.

Called ‘YourVoice’, it is being produced three times a year - to coincide with the start of the summer, autumn and winter terms.

The newsletter is the idea of Acting Chief Inspector Neil Tyre following comments by pupils at a Youth Summit at Sutton Life Centre on Friday 28 March when young people had their say on personal safety issues that concerned them.

The first issue of the newsletter was delivered last week to 21 schools in the borough for onward distribution to nearly 18,000 pupils aged 11-18. It includes advice on issues raised at the summit including physical bullying, intimidation via social media and places where pupils say they feel unsafe.

It is hoped that the content of future issues will be shaped by the pupils themselves about any matter concerning their personal safety whether in or out of school.

General advice about issues raised will be published in subsequent newsletters whilst the police, council, their school and other organisations will work together to achieve long term solutions to any problems.

Inspector Tyre said: “This is a major initiative for the police and our team of designated schools officers. Its success will rely on pupils telling us how we can help them.”

Contact details of Sutton’s six designated schools officers are published in YourVoice.
