Lots of UK police forces have been putting out messages on their websites and issuing press releases asking everyone that will be watching the World Cup to be careful, drink responsibly, don’t drink and drive, and walk away from potentially violent situations.
It’s a fact that each time the World Cup or the Euro finals come around offences, such as domestic abuse, drink-related violence and anti-social behaviour increase. In response the police put out more patrols in city centres, stop more drivers, visit more pubs to check on drunkenness and underage drinking and support initiatives by domestic violence charities.
While this good work is going on the supermarkets and other drink retailers start rolling out their deals. For example. I sometimes buy four cans of 6% cider as part of my weekly shopping, especially during the summer. Up until this week these cans were £5 for four, £1.25 each. Today they were offering two packs of four for £7, so I bought two! That’s 87.5p each, a 30% reduction. My wife’s favourite bottle of Pinot Grigio was down from £6 to £4.50 today too, so she’s well happy. (I could have got it at £3.99 at a different supermarket – me not so happy!)
So on Saturday I shall take a taxi, drink four of the cans, with food, and save the rest for another time and as a result I will thoroughly enjoy the misery of watching England give yet another lacklustre performance.
So, for the sake of all the police who have to deal with the problems and the medical professionals who treat the wounded and for all the potential victims, please take it easy.
You know it makes sense!
