Cumbria Police, who link to this website, have issued some timely advice about security during the summer months. Read on...
The sun is shining and people are out enjoying BBQs, sitting out in the garden, going for walks and generally just enjoying the warmer spell.
Cumbria Police do not want to put a dampener on things, but they are encouraging everyone to ensure that they remember one key thing, security.
In west Cumbria there has been a slight increase in insecure burglaries, when criminals are walking into people’s homes and stealing items that are quick and easy to take.
Making people feel safer in their own homes is a priority for Cumbria police and a lot of work has been done to tackle this issue. Since May there have been eight arrests all in connection with burglaries in the local area. Two people are on bail while enquiries continue, three were released without charge and three are due to appear at Crown Court in due course.
In many areas within west Cumbria the local police have emphasised the importance of crime prevention and improvements have been seen in communities who have taken this advice and are security conscious.
However there are still opportunistic criminals out there and people should remain vigilant.
Sergeant Amanda Conway said: “We are bringing awareness to these crimes in an effort to make home security second nature. Gone are the days when you could leave your front door open during the summer weather.
“People need to remember that when they are in the garden they cannot hear who could be walking through their front door. Also, leaving ground floor windows open when out of the house provides a potential way for a criminal to gain entry. Don’t leave keys, handbags, mobiles or other valuables where they can be easily seen by a potential intruder. It takes less than a minute to lock your door but to deal with the aftermath of a burglary can take weeks.
“We are continuing to tackle the issue and will be out on patrol in key areas, providing security advice and making sure people are not leaving themselves vulnerable. Notices will be left for home owners where insecure properties are located. There are police desks for members of the community to speak to police community support officers and get some key security tips in the following areas:
- The Wave Centre at Maryport every Thursday between 3 and 4pm.
- Lidl at Wigton every Wednesday between 1 and 4pm
- Town Hall in Cleator Moor every Wednesday between 1 and 3pm
“Our aim is not to spoil the summer but to make it one to remember for the right reasons, not because you were a victim of a burglary.”
TCPW Comment: Sound advice from Sergeant Conway and it’s good to see that Cumbria Police are taking these proactive crime prevention measures.
