According to the findings of this website’s Home Security Survey, Ninety one percent of us leave lights on around the house or flat when we go out.  That’s the good news!

Unfortunately, 61% of us who do this don’t operate them on timers or other automatic switches, which means that we either have to rely on neighbours to turn lights on and off when we’re away for a few nights, or we don’t bother or just leave some on constantly.

Evidence of occupancy is one of the key factors considered by the burglar in deciding whether to break into your home or not and a house that is in darkness at 8pm along a street of well-lit and occupied homes is going to stand out like a sore thumb.   If your neighbours are happy to pop into your home twice a day to turn some lights on and off, that’s great, but if this arrangement is not possible do seriously consider purchasing some automatic programmable switches. They’re not that expensive and a couple of low energy lamps burning for a few hours each evening while you’re away will cost you pennies.
