On the 30th July this year I made mention of Government plans to update the Scrap Metal Dealers Act of 1964 and to quickly introduce other measures to ban cash payments and increase powers for authorities. In my view these measures are absolutely essential in order to control the levels of metal theft that are affecting us all.

Today I just happened upon The Art Newspaper and an article written by Riah Pryor, which is suggesting that things are not as straightforward as I first thought and there is a danger that the progression of the Bill might be delayed due to a lack of parliamentary time.  It seems that this happened last summer, which I wasn’t aware of.   The paper quotes Richard Ottaway, MP for Croydon (who’s behind the bill) who says “There needs to be a tsunami of support for this Bill’s progression into law,” A spokeswoman for his office is advising heritage organisations to write to local MPs now.

So, I shall also write to my MP today and maybe some of you could also write to yours, because this Bill mustn’t run out of time, it’s just too important.

You know it makes sense
