Jazz is the first detection dog in the world to be trained to detect forensic markings on stolen metal. Trained by former Lancashire police officer and Home Office Dog Instructor Mick Swindells, Jazz can detect SelectaDNA’s forensic markings on a wide range of metals including copper, lead and aluminium.

Metal theft is a growing problem in the UK and cost our economy about £7.7m in 2011, up 10% on the previous year (See previous blogs of 24th August and 30 July).

SelectaDNA, who advertise on this website, supplies its product to the majority of the UK police forces to support various anti-theft initiatives and to companies, such as Network Rail, to deter metal thieves and to detect stolen metal. Clearly, finding marked stolen metal in a huge pile of it can be quite a challenge for the police, but with dogs like Jazz becoming available detection is going to be a whole lot more efficient.

James Brown, Director at Selectamark says "Jazz could revolutionise the way we search for stolen metals and criminals themselves. Previously, officers had to search manually for marked metal which could prove time consuming and at times not successful as often the process was like finding a needle in a haystack. The combination of using a trained dog like Jazz to sniff out stolen metal marked with SelectaDNA is surely the ultimate search tool for police and any other investigators determined to catch metal thieves and other types of offenders."

Keep ‘em sniffing Jazz
