At the beginning of this month Sergeant Chris Green of the Avon and Somerset Constabulary posted up news of an initiative to encourage people to install anti-theft tracking software applications onto their phones, tablets and laptops.

To support this initiative they have released a video called ‘Has your gadget got APPeal?’.  The film stars PCSO Neil Spiring as the thief - an up-and-coming starlet of the silver screen - who previously starred in Avon and Somerset’s film, ‘See Bike Crime? Call 999!’).  I see a BAFTA on its way!

In the film Sergeant Green is shown speaking to the victim and asking him to use the application to find the location of this guy’s stolen tablet.  Within seconds a geographical location is provided and recognising that this is extremely close to the address of a known and prominent offender the film concludes with Sergeant Green knocking on a door and apprehending Neil and recovering the tablet – job done!

Sergeant Green’s article concludes by telling us that tracking apps can be downloaded from app stores and other software outlets and that many of them are free.

It all seems to make a lot of sense, so what are you waiting for?
