South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Shaun Wright has advised that with some simple precautionary measures, owners could contribute greatly towards reducing mobile phone theft.
Up to 10,000 mobiles are stolen every month, with some two thirds of victims being young teenagers. The soaring value of mobile smartphones, the ease with which they can be sold on and the personal data stored on them means that have become the most popular – and sometimes the easiest - target for theft.
Commissioner Wright reminds owners to keep their phones out of view when not in use – and not just in back pockets or in the top of open handbags - ensure phone applications have been terminated and that the phone security lock is in place. Phones should be used more discretely in public places and under no circumstances lent to strangers who ask to borrow them.
He also suggests that electronic serial numbers, unique phone identification numbers and phone details are recorded and that lost or stolen mobile phones are reported immediately to both police and mobile service providers.
Shaun Wright and we at The Crime Prevention Website recommend that you register your phone with Immobilise. You’ll need to find your IMEI number for this which can be found in the battery compartment of the phone or you can access it by typing *#06# on your screen. Also get yourself a tracking application for the phone.
