As you know, catalytic converters or ‘Cats’ are those expensive exhaust filtering systems on our vehicles that are designed to remove many of the toxins from vehicle emissions. Each of them contains small amounts of three very rare and valuable metals: Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium. Their use in three-way catalytic converters has led to great increases in value and considerable investment interest, which is why we have seen a steady rise in the theft of Cats.
When they’re stolen, the bills for repair and their replacement can run into many hundreds of pounds, loss of revenue for businesses and increased insurance costs.
High ground clearance vehicles, such as 4X4s and Transit and Sprinter vans, are particularly vulnerable to these thefts, which have been known to take place in broad daylight, not just during the middle of the night.
We were therefore particularly pleased and grateful to have received a set of guidance notes for preventing Cat theft from our friend, Anne Chalmers, one of the crime reduction specialists at Thames Valley Police. If you’ve got a catalytic converter on your vehicle and want to make sure you’re doing everything you can to prevent its theft do take a quick look at the new advice page on this website in Motor Vehicle Security, Reducing theft from vehicles, Catalytic converter theft.
You know it makes sense!
....and thanks again to Anne!
