I just came across this great scheme running in Mississauga, Southern Ontario, Canada.
In an operation called ‘Freeze’, which is a Partnership between the local police and Mac’s Convenience Stores, local police are handing out ‘tickets’ (coupons for a free drink) to school children for acts of kindness and for exhibiting positive behaviour. The scheme calls it ‘positive ticketing’ and it encourages positive interactions between police and young people. Police may issue a ticket to children wearing their cycle helmets, doing good deeds, participating in community activities, picking up litter, or deterring crime and they can also be used simply as icebreakers to start conversations with young people.
I’ve no doubt the police here in the UK have done something similar, but what a good way to reward the vast majority of our young people who are just nice people often doing good things for others, with no expectation of a reward. Nice one!
