Newton Aycliffe Neighbourhood Police Team have recently received a grant of £5,000 from Great Aycliffe and Middridge Area Action Partnership to provide free shed alarms and other crime prevention equipment to local residents.
The area around Burdon Close and Marshall Road have thus far benefitted from the initiative and it’s hoped that residents’ use of the equipment will deter any further shed break-ins in the area.
The Northern Echo quotes PCSO Gavin Laycock as saying “It is about taking a preventive rather than a reactive response and sending a message to criminals that sheds and garages are not easy targets”
TCPW Comment Our Home Security Survey suggests that 38% of us have a poorly secured shed and the numerous reports of shed break-ins I come across in my daily trawl of the media confirms that this is a much bigger problem than some might think. In fact, as the Crime Survey for England and Wales suggests, thieving from outside the home and around the garden is one of the few crimes that’s been going up rather than down.
You might want to have a quick look at the previous news item about sheds on these news pages to find out why this is happening and as we’re now getting out into our gardens again I would suggest that now is the time to improve shed security and put the shed security dread to bed.
