I think this is the first book about the history of British policiing I've read without getting miffed about something along the way and when Clive Emsley gets to the late 1970s (when I joined up) I thought he must have been sitting in the same canteen as me eating a full fry-up! Clive captures the difficulties, the ups and downs and the culture of policing most accurately and his story telling is engaging. A fascinating read.
