I’ve just taken a look at the latest findings from our Home Security Survey about door locking for houses and bungalows and thought you might like to see the results.

Respondents are asked to respond to the following statement:

The main street entrance door is... and they are asked to choose the closest locking arrangement description. There are also notes to help them answer the question. There are six descriptions to choose from and this is what they said

The main street entrance door is:

  • 44%        Fitted with a multipoint locking system
  • 30%        Fitted with a BS3621, BS8621 or BS10621 mortice deadlock and night latch
  • 9%          Locked, but differently from the choices given
  • 9%          Fitted with a non BS mortice deadlock and night latch
  • 5%          An enhanced security door certified to PAS24 2007/2012
  • 3%          Fitted with a night latch only

So what does this tell me?

First of all the results are a little more ‘positive’ than I would expect from a nationwide survey as many of the people who complete this survey are Neighbourhood Watch members or are generally interested in their home security and are therefore security aware.  That said, the figures are still revealing.

Enhanced security doorsets: I last reported on this matter in Newsletter Number 3 in November 2012 and the figure for enhanced security doorsets – 5% - hasn’t altered a jot!  This is disappointing, since they aren’t that much more to purchase than an ordinary multipoint locking door. So, if you’re thinking about changing your front door (or the back or side), do please seriously think about spending a little extra to get a door that has been designed to keep the intruder at bay.

Non BS deadlocks and Night latches only:  Those people who are relying on a non BS mortice lock or only have the door held on a night latch should very seriously consider upgrading their security. Thieves will target homes with poor security. This has been confirmed by the British Crime Survey, which tells us that a less than adequately secured home is ten times more likely to get broken into.

Enough of this data!

Please help me get to 3,000 completed surveys by June.  This will enable us, or rather Ben, to do the extra programming needed to enable me to drill down further into the findings and reveal some other unpleasant truths!

Please share this news item and help me reach our target

You know it makes sense!
