I just found this story on the Bucks Free Press website:

Thames Valley Police have recently launched a trial of what they call ‘Burglary Prevention Boxes’, which are being issued to residents living in Chiltern and South Bucks districts who might be going on holiday or will otherwise be away from their homes for an extended period.

Each box contains a plug-in timer switch to power a table lamp, a plug in device that emits the sort of flashing light you see through the curtains when someone in the house is watching television, a battery powered motion detector alarm that can be used in the house or an outbuilding, an ultra-violet pen for marking your property with your postcode and plenty of crime prevention literature.

They’re running the trial until the end of the summer and will make a decision about continuing the initiative then – there are a limited number of boxes during the trial.

If you’d like to take part in the trial please call 101 and ask to speak to a Neighbourhood Officer for Chiltern and South Buckinghamshire.

TCPW Comment:  Good idea and it’s great to see Thames Valley Police doing something really practical to help their residents.  If you don’t manage to get hold of one of the boxes don’t let that you stop you from doing all the right things when you go away.  Most of the things you can do to protect an unoccupied dwelling are free or quite cheap.  Take a look at my Holiday Security Checklist to find out more.
