Try saying that quickly!
This weekend I’ve had the unenviable task of removing a worn out 6,000 litre-per-hour pump from my pond and cleaning out the collected stinking sludge and dead things. It’s actually two ponds either side of a path where the pump’s in one and the water feature it powers is in the other; both being connected by a tunnel under the path. That was fun!
While I was down and amongst it a thought struck my mind about the possibility of losing the new pump to thieves. A quick Google search revealed a few reported thefts and amongst these was the one experienced by Sue Toomer of St Annes in Lancashire a couple of weeks ago, which you can read about here. What I’m saying is that pumps can be expensive things, especially if you also have a UV filter and so you do need to think about their security.
The new pump I bought on Sunday was £160, so not cheap and so I thought I would at least engrave my home postcode onto it followed by my house number – a sort of standby method of marking something in the garden. Fortunately the pump is 1metre down and the power lead is wired into a switch with most of the cable lying in the connecting tunnel and the bottom of the deep ponds. I cable-clipped the little of the cable that was exposed and covered it with bark, so I’ve pretty much done all I can to hide everything away and frustrate a thief should he pay us a visit. Of course, my perimeter security is pretty good and so I think my garden will not be top of the garden thief’s list – fingers crossed!
If you’ve been busy in the garden this weekend please take a moment to ponder about the stuff you’ve got in it. You’d be surprised at the total value of plants, furniture, tools and other equipment sitting exposed in your garden, most of which can be easily sold on at car boot sales.
Protect it cuz you know it makes sense!
