Newcastle’s on-line Chronicle Live yesterday showed their support and backing to change the gun laws in order that those who hold firearms licences actually pay the real costs for administering them.  According to the campaign, the cost of a firearms licence is £50, but it actually costs the police £200 to administer.

The campaign was started by Bobby Turnbull who lost his Mum, Sister and Aunty on the New Year’s Day shootings in Horden, County Durham in 2012.  They were killed by Michael Atherton who later shot himself.  Atherton legally owned six firearms despite a history of domestic violence.

Mr Turnbull has met Crime Prevention Minister Norman Baker and Labour’s Yvette Cooper who have supported his calls to increase the charges and has now set up an on-line petition being run by The Sunday Sun. They’ll need 100,000 signatures to force MPs to consider a debate.

TCPW Comment:  Although I have no issue with those that wish to hold firearms I was very surprised to learn that taxpayers who don’t hold firearms are paying the costs of those that do.  We all have to pay the true cost for getting a passport and the cost of a prescription rises with inflation each year and don’t talk to me about car tax! So how did this one escape the coalition’s attention when the belts started tightening a few years ago?  According to news reports I’ve read it seems that Mr Turnbull also has the support of the police.
