According to a report I’ve just read in the Ilford Recorder it seems that the Chadwell Ward in Redbridge had the highest levels of burglary in London earlier in the year. Local PC, Katie Boreham reckoned that just about every street in the ward had been targeted. Twelve months to January 2014 saw burglary rise by one third to 211 compared to the same period the year before.
- February 26 – March 20 23 Burglaries
- March 26 – April 20 23 Burglaries
- April 22 – May 20 4 Burglaries
- May 6 – May 20 3 Burglaries
- May 13 – May 20 1 Burglary
Whilst these time periods above seem a very strange way to present the figures it’s clear that the extra sustained policing has worked a treat!
To tackle the problem officers were brought in from outside Redbridge to patrol the area, offenders were targeted and number plate recognition was used to help them in these efforts. It’s also pleasing to see that crime prevention advice was offered to the residents.
In spite of this huge fall in burglary the police are to continue focussing on Chadwell for the long term.
TCPW Comment: Having recently conducted a crime analysis of another ward’s crime in London (for a house builder I’m helping), which turned up 65 burglaries in a whole year, it’s easy to see why the police are still concerned about Chadwell and are going to continue their efforts.
Of course, we’re not privy to the details of this operation and so we don’t know exactly what has caused the drop. Was it the presence of uniform police patrolling the streets? Was it intelligence gathering that led to the arrest of a suspect who was responsible for the majority of these burglaries, or was it the fact that residents were forewarned and listened and acted upon the crime prevention advice they were given? I suspect all these measures were used at the same time and so it would be very difficult to split them apart to see which was more effective.
Whatever made the difference this is yet another example of some excellent policing!
