Police efforts to convince us to leave nothing on show in the car and to keep them locked is happening worldwide!

On 22 May I reported on Whitehaven’s (Cumbria) unnecessary car crimes and on 27 May I followed this up with the frustrations expressed by an Australian police officer in Bundy in Queensland, Australia.

Now I see that police in Albany in Georgia (US) are running what they call a ‘clean car’ campaign.  In this initiative they’re walking around residential streets finding unlocked cars and vehicles with property on show.  If something’s amiss they’re checking the licence numbers to find the owners and knocking on their doors to tell them to do something!

Will this work? Only time will tell, but being somewhat cynical I think the campaign will have a short shelf-life. We need to make ‘clean car’ and ‘locking up’ a behavioural routine. And maybe we should not only condemn the thieves that submit to the temptation, but also strongly criticize the car owners for offering the opportunities on a plate.      I do wonder if there will ever be a time when all cars left unlocked for a period of time will lock themselves.  The technology is certainly there.
