A news story in the Manchester Evening News today (by Alex Scapens) reports that there was a significant rise in vehicle crime in Stockport in the 12 months up to April 2014 – up 25%.

Inspector Scott Winters is quoted as saying at a meeting with the council that a lack of manpower has been partly to blame along with drivers routinely leaving vehicles unlocked or with valuables on display.

Police and Crime Commission Tony Lloyd, speaking at the same meeting, blamed the government for its ‘reckless cuts’ to frontline policing.

TCPW Comment: With twenty percent cuts in central government funding of the police service over 5 years it is pretty obvious that something’s got to give - and here we have just one of several examples of where things have started to go wrong (I reported on a rise in Rural crime this week and in violent crime in Hampstead only last week).

Regardless as to whether or not the funding reductions are affecting the police’s ability to keep crime under control we all still have a responsibility to prevent it by not presenting easy opportunities. Unfortunately we often create the necessary conditions for unnecessary crimes to take place and if you want know what these opportunities are then click on the top link below.
