It’s always good to see the police running initiatives to help out university students as they begin their new year, especially the freshers for whom it may be the first time staying away from home.
This time it’s the turn of Coventry’s students to receive some help from the neighbourhood policing team for Woodlands and Whoberley.
Officers have been knocking on doors, offering advice and a free property marking service to help them protect their valuables. They’ve also been shown how to register their property on the national property database at www.immobilise.com.
Sergeant Lee Foggatt, responsible for policing in Woodlands and Whoberley, said: "I really want to drum-home the importance of students locking their windows and doors when they go out.
"We recognise that we have a large proportion of international students living within the community and to ease the communication, a small number of officers have completed a basic Mandarin course funded by Coventry University.
"By working with residents, councillors and Coventry and Warwick universities we will continue to reduce the number of victims of burglary."
This work by Coventry police and all the police services up and down the country to help students is extremely important since a student’s risk of crime is quite a lot higher than the population at large – about twice as high for most crime categories.
West Midlands police have an excellent crime prevention site for students, which I would urge people to visit at www.saferstudents.co.uk and there’s also plenty of advice on this site to help.
